Is Your Craft Supply Taking Over Your House?

It is a common problem that plagues many craft addicts.  Their craft supply takes over everything.  Do you have knitting needles coming out your ears?  Is there yarn as far as the eye can see?  Have you got fabric stashed in every cupboard and drawer in the house?  If that's the case, what you need is a little organization.

If you don't want your craft supply to rule your house, the first thing to do is know what you need.  Go shopping with a set list and try to avoid impulsive buying.  If you only need red yarn or green beads don't walk into the store and buy eight or nine different colors because they're bright or pretty or interesting.

A common problem that many crafters have is that someone might ask for a specific item in a specific color.  Then, after the project is done, there may be materials left over. Those materials may not be a common type or color that the crafter usually uses.  Thus, the items add to the craft supply clutter.  They just accumulate and before the crafter knows it they are up to their ears in excess items.

One way to combat the craft supply clutter is to swap.  Many times there are yarn, fabric or bead trading groups that a person can join.  That way you can get rid of items you no longer need while getting items back that are actually useful.

Another way to clear your craft supply out is to sell items you no longer need.  Many crafters tend to be pack rats as well.  They don't like to throw perfectly good items out, even if they aren't going to use them ever.  By selling your excess craft items you can keep your craft supply fresh and interesting, rather than stale and useless.

Another good way to control your craft supply, instead of letting it control you, is to keep all of your items in organized containers.  Make sure you have designated areas for needles, thread, fabric, yarn, scissors, buttons and whatever other items you like to use.  Many times you can buy storage units specifically designed for certain craft supplies.  For instance, knitting needle holders are readily available at most craft stores.

If you suddenly find that you have more of something than you can fit in its designated area, then it is probably time to get rid of some of the craft supply clutter.

Another simple way to keep your craft supply fresh and under control is to keep all of your craft supplies in designated containers.  As you use them, transfer what's left to a different container.  Anything that hasn't switched boxes after a certain amount of time, such as 3 or 4 months, you probably do not need anymore.

If you keep your craft supply organized and fresh, it will no longer control your house.  Keep things neat and simple and you'll find that it's easier and more fun to work on your favorite crafts.  So, instead of letting your crafts rule over everything, make sure that you rule over your craft supply!
